Bonn makes a career.

Draftsman

Specialization in architecture or civil engineering

The City of Bonn offers training as a draftsman in the fields of architecture and civil engineering. Draughtsmen generally implement the design sketches and specifications of architects and civil engineers. They create true-to-scale drawings and plans to enable flawless construction. At the beginning of your training at the City of Bonn, you will learn conventional drawing. However, the majority of your training will involve learning and using computer-aided design (CAD) with a computer program.

During your training with the City of Bonn, you will also learn how to convert data, define and create layers and, of course, create and manage drawings (constructions of floor plans, sections, views, etc.) on the computer. You will also gain an insight into construction processes and the associated building regulations. You will learn about different building materials and their properties and find out what you need to bear in mind when using them.

Vocational school lessons take place weekly at the Carl-Reuther-Berufskolleg of the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis in Hennef. In addition, you will complete a three-month construction site internship (two courses of six weeks each) at the Kerpen training center of the Berufsförderungswerk der Bauindustrie Nordrhein-Westfalen. The basics of construction skills are taught here.

Focus on the field of architecture:
Training in the architecture specialization takes place in the new construction department of Bonn Municipal Building Management (SGB). The department consists of around 30 employees, most of whom have studied architecture and engineering, but also administrative staff and draughtsmen. The main task of the new construction department is the implementation of construction measures in the public sector. Drawings for schools and kindergartens are therefore a focal point of the training here.

During your training, you will of course also draw other buildings - including all aspects of construction. In addition, you will support your colleagues in administrative work, for example by creating job-related tables, presentations and text documents.

Focus of the civil engineering specialization:
Training in the civil engineering specialization takes place at the Civil Engineering Office of the City of Bonn. Here you will mainly deal with the planning and construction of new roads. You will also gain in-depth insights into the areas of urban drainage and surveying. During your training with the City of Bonn, you will also carry out a number of site inspections and practise determining quantities, masses and dead loads of various construction materials and components.

Training begins on August 1 of each year and lasts three years.

The training period can be shortened under certain conditions (previous education, performance) upon application.

Recruitment requirements:

  • Secondary school certificate after completing compulsory full-time schooling

Payment:

Depending on the year of training, you will receive the following monthly gross training allowance:

  1. Year of training: 1,218.26 euros
  2. Year of training: 1,268.20 euros
  3. Year of training: 1,314.02 euros

You will also receive capital-forming benefits and a special annual payment. You will also receive a learning materials allowance of 50.00 euros in each year of training. If you pass the final examination on your first attempt, you will also be paid a final bonus of 400.00 euros.

You are entitled to 30 vacation days per calendar year.
