Specialist for media services

Library or archive specialization

The demand for information in business and society is growing by leaps and bounds, and the so-called information overload is increasing in parallel. In the near future, more and more information specialists will therefore be needed to procure, process, communicate and secure media and information. These information specialists also include media and information service specialists (FaMIs for short), who can be trained in the following specializations:

  • Library
  • archive
  • Information and documentation
  • picture agency
  • Medical documentation

The City of Bonn trains FaMIs in the fields of archive and library. Qualified trainers are available to assist you with your training in this profession. However, you should bring a few things with you: Good written and spoken German, knowledge of English, PC skills as well as enjoyment in dealing with people and the ability to work in a team are important here. You should also have a keen interest in history for the archive apprenticeship.

Vocational school lessons take place twice a week at the Joseph-DuMont-Berufskolleg in Cologne.

Focus of the archive specialization:

The training as a FaMI in the archive specialization is completed in the city archive of the city of Bonn. However, you will also get to know all other departments of the "City Archive and City History Library". You will also complete external internships so that you can deepen the skills you have acquired at vocational school in other subject areas. The tasks of an archive clerk include the acquisition and indexing of analog and digital information from official and private bodies.

The proper maintenance and preservation of the holdings are also part of your training. The city archive sees itself as an information service provider. This means that direct customer contact in consultation or when processing written or verbal inquiries is just as much a part of your duties as public relations work.

Focus of the library specialization:

The City of Bonn offers training as a library assistant in the "Stadtarchiv und der Stadthistorischen Bibliothek" (here the training is mainly carried out in the library department, you will also get to know the other departments) as well as in the city library (here you will be deployed in the central library and the district libraries). Please refer to the job advertisement to find out which location you should apply for. You will also complete external internships in this subject area.

As a library research assistant trainee, you will research databases and data networks as well as providing information, advice and support to customers. You will learn how to use bibliographic information resources to acquire media. You will be responsible for checking and processing deliveries and invoices as well as processing media according to the rules of formal indexing and assisting with content indexing.

Your tasks will also include equipping media with library technology and organizing and managing collections. You will also process loans, returns, reminders and pre-orders for media. You will become familiar with electronic and conventional delivery systems and use them to procure information and media for customers. You will also be involved in exhibitions and events.

Training at the City of Bonn begins on August 1 of each year and lasts three years. Under certain conditions (previous education, performance), the training period can be shortened on application.

Recruitment requirements:

- Secondary school certificate after completing compulsory full-time schooling

Payment:

Depending on the year of training, you will receive the following monthly gross training allowance:

  1. Year of training: 1,218.26 euros
  2. Year of training: 1,268.20 euros
  3. Year of training: 1,314.02 euros

You will also receive capital-forming benefits and a special annual payment. You will also receive a learning materials allowance of 50.00 euros in each year of training. If you pass the final examination on your first attempt, you will also receive a final bonus of 400.00 euros.

You are entitled to 30 vacation days per calendar year.
