The training as a cemetery gardener is mainly carried out at the northern cemetery of the city of Bonn, which is organizationally located at the Office for Urban Greenery. A total of nine employees are responsible for the maintenance of the approximately 31-hectare cemetery and around 150 care graves. As a gardener, you will lay out graves, maintain and plant them and take care of the maintenance and planting of the entire cemetery and the associated paths.

You will also learn how to identify plants and their characteristics and how to make the best possible use of them. You will learn how to plan, lay out and replant gravesites. You will also be taught how to create bouquets, wreaths and flower arrangements.

During your training, you will work with various tools and machines. Your supervising trainers will of course teach you how to use these tools competently. Mandatory training content that cannot be taught at the cemeteries of the city of Bonn is partly taught at other municipal cemeteries and partly in cooperation with private companies.

Vocational school lessons take place once or twice a week at the Humboldtstraße vocational college in Cologne. You will also take part in several inter-company training courses.

Training with the City of Bonn begins on August 1 of each year and lasts three years. Under certain conditions (previous education, performance), the training period can be shortened on application.
