Training as a geomatics technician is carried out at the City of Bonn's Office for Land Management and Geoinformation. The office maintains a geodata infrastructure for all spatial IT applications of the Bonn city administration. It is also responsible for all cadastral and surveying matters in the city area. The geodata infrastructure is being expanded using open source software and in-house developments. You will learn how to make the latest trends in geoinformation usable for the Bonn city administration.
The profession of geomatics technician is still relatively new. This new profession takes account of the increasing importance of spatial information for administrative and business processes. The tasks include the production, structuring, procurement, analysis and presentation of data with a spatial reference. The spatial reference is often only part of the data that is processed. With us, you will gain an insight into many fields of activity in a city administration.
During your training, you will learn how to evaluate data for topicality and completeness and how to present it in maps, graphics, 3D representations and modern web applications. You will also be taught digital and cartographic design techniques. Database and geographic information systems (GIS) are used to process geographical data.
One of the important tasks of a geomatics technician is to advise customers on the processing, structuring and use of geographical information in their fields of work.
You should therefore have good communication skills and enjoy interacting with other people. The focus of the training is on handling digital geodata at modern workstations in the administration. To round off your training, you will also learn how to collect geographical data in the surveying field service. This shows that you belong to the same professional group as the surveying technician.
You will be supported by qualified trainers during your training in this profession. However, you should bring a few things with you: These include logical thinking skills, an interest in computer technology, a good knowledge of mathematics and an interest in geography (related to maps and coordination systems).
Vocational school lessons take the form of block teaching at the Heinrich Hertz Europakolleg in Bonn.
