Training as a media technologist specializing in printing is carried out in the print shop of the city of Bonn. The municipal print shop sees itself as an in-house print service provider and produces brochures, leaflets, flyers and, for example, carbonless sets as well as political documents in a fully integrated operation with pre-press, digital printing, offset printing and further processing. The printed products are provided for the administration and for the citizens of Bonn as part of the public relations work.
As a media technologist in the city administration's print shop, you will produce a wide range of different print products. You will analyze the incoming print jobs for technical feasibility and check whether the print data can be used and is complete. You then prepare the print data for the digital printing process - this is done using specific hardware and software. During the largely automated printing process, you monitor the accuracy of the print to guarantee the consistently high quality of the end product. Planning, controlling and monitoring work processes is therefore also part of your job. As part of your training, you will learn special qualifications in data preparation for digital printing, the digital printing process and for print finishing processes.
During your training, you will produce individualized and personalized print products such as mailings. Digital printing is always about producing monochrome or color short runs or individual copies economically and
print single copies economically and in high quality.
Communication with upstream and downstream departments to optimize the production process and customer-oriented, on-time work will also be an important part of your training. You will learn to work both independently and as part of a team, taking economic and ecological aspects into account.
You will be supported by qualified trainers during your training in this profession. However, you should bring a few things with you: In addition to a good knowledge of German, a good knowledge of mathematics is essential, as you will have to calculate lengths, areas, volumes, weights and typographical measurements, for example. Knowledge in the area of crafts and technology (interest and skill in craftsmanship) can be helpful for various processing techniques. If you have some knowledge of physics, this can be useful for understanding mechanical and hydraulic functions on machines and equipment. You should also have the ability to work in a team, flexibility, accuracy, diligence, willingness to learn, a sense of responsibility and good color vision. As you will be working on machines, you should have a certain degree of physical resilience.
